The City of Grants Pass is recruiting to fill the newly created position of Fire Chief. The Fire Chief will lead the Fire Rescue Department and oversee personnel, budget, and resources. 

The Fire Chief will be a part of our high performing organization as a member of the executive leadership team.  The Fire Chief will advise and make recommendations to City Council, City Manager, department personnel, and local committees and groups.  The candidate selected for Fire Chief will serve as the head of the Department and be a skilled communicator with a high level of expertise in fire operations and emergency management.  

 

The ideal candidate is a collaborative team member with strong leadership and communication skills, with experience working in an engaged community.  
 

The Fire Chief works closely with all other City departments and many allied agencies.  A close working relationship between departments is beneficial in serving the City’s internal and external customers as efficiently as possible.  As a result, it is essential that the Fire Chief have a working knowledge of municipal government, an awareness of community issues, and a leadership style that promotes collaboration.  


The ideal candidate will have exceptional management, interpersonal, and communication skills, with a hands-on and proactive approach to addressing a broad range of challenges.  The successful  candidate will be a strategic and innovative thinker who is comfortable operating in a dynamic environment.  This requires a visionary and proactive leader with the ability to facilitate discussion and collaboration between elected officials, and who feels comfortable and at-ease serving an active and involved citizenry.  Our Fire Chief will welcome input and debate.  Additionally, the Fire Chief will promote community engagement and will endeavor to operate in an open-government manner.  The Chief will also be a positive influence on day-to-day operations, have a “can-do” attitude, and will be comfortable with a hands-on approach to all aspects of departmental procedures.  The ideal candidate will have a natural interest in mentoring and guiding staff in delivering high quality customer service, having patience to not only explain strategy and procedures but also explaining how to effectively and efficiently achieve City-established goals with a pro-active approach versus a reactive response.
