GRANTS PASS – Everyone has that person on their holiday list who is difficult to shop for, and a living, growing gift just may be the answer to the problem. Through the City of Grants Pass Memorial Tree Program, residents can purchase a tree to donate in honor of a living loved one or to memorialize a loved one who has passed on.
As part of the goal of the Grants Pass Urban Tree Advisory Committee to revitalize city parks and by-ways, the program plants Memorial Groves of trees donated by residents to honor individuals. Donated trees must be purchased from the city and are planted in November and December, the optimum time for planting.
The city offers high quality trees to purchase for a donated planting. The trees are approximately 1.5 inches in diameter and 10 feet in height for deciduous trees, or 3 to 5 feet in height for conifer trees. The price of either type of tree is $100 per tree.
Each tree is guaranteed for two years and will be replaced by the city at no extra charge should it die within two years. It is understood once planted, the tree is the exclusive property of the city which is responsible for watering, fertilizing, pruning, and mulching as it deems necessary.
Donors are invited to a ceremony honoring the individuals on behalf of whom a tree has been donated and planted. For trees planted before Jan. 1, the ceremony will be held during Arbor Week each year.
To purchase a memorial tree, download and complete the Memorial Tree Application from the city’s website and submit as instructed on the form, or contact Parks and Property Superintendent Wendy Giordano at (541)450-6060.
