COMMENTS European hornbeams are known for their great performance as street trees. The 'Emerald Avenue' cultivar is noted for its rich green foliage in the hot and dry summer months. It also develops a strong central leader. Slower growing, yet long-lived and strong tree with silvery gray bark and bronze-yellow fall color. Tolerant of poor soil conditions. Does not require much pruning, but can withstand hard pruning. Approved cultivars include 'Fastigiata,' 'Emerald Avenue,' and the narrow (15ft) 'Frans Fontaine'
