COMMENTS A large shade tree that does well with both heat and drought once established. Has a classic vase shape when mature. Seeds are very small and favored by birds. American elms suffer from dutch elm disease, however there are many resistant cultivars commercially available. Any american elms that are not resistant to Dutch elm disease need to be strictly avoided. Approved cultivars include 'Jefferson,' ' Valley Forge,' 'New Harmony,' 'Princeton,' and 'Princeton II.' Other cultivars require approval from Urban Forester.
