Approximately six years ago, the Fire/Rescue Division took over the Child Car Safety Seat Program in Josephine County. Each vehicle manufacturer has its own system to install a child safety seat in their vehicles. A number of firefighters, police officers and dispatchers are trained to correctly install child safety seats according to manufacturer’s recommendations. A recent check of car seats installed by vehicle owners showed that over 80% were installed incorrectly. Incorrect installation can lead to serious injury or death of the child riding in the seat.
Each year, the Department inspects 250 to 330 seats and distributes an average 150 seats per year. Distribution events are put on six times a year, where child safety seats are sold at a reduced cost made possible through grants and donations. In addition, two child safety seat clinics are conducted that allow parents to have their already installed seats inspected for correct installation.
