Communications / Records Unit
The Communications and Records Division of the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety provides quick, effective and efficient service to both the civilian population and Department employees. The Communication Center is responsible for radio communications, telephone communication, and operation of automated data systems. The Records Bureau collects, maintains, and retrieves police data in support of the Grants Pass Department of Safety, other government agencies, and the public.
The Communications / Records Division is supervised by Lieutenant Dennis Ward.
Lt. Ward began his career in law enforcement in 1996 working in the jail for the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. After two years as a Corrections Officer he was promoted to Corporal for the Sheriff’s Office. In 1999 he took a position as a police officer with the City of Grants Pass. Since that time he has served as a defensive tactics instructor, member of the SWAT team, field training officer (FTO), Patrol Sergeant and Detective Sergeant in charge of the Major Crimes Detectives. Prior to his law enforcement career he worked in the U. S. Navy doing water chemistry on nuclear power plants.
Education & Certificates
Dennis holds his Basic, Intermediate, Supervisory, Advanced, and Management level police certificates through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). He has both his Associate’s and Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He is a board member of the Children’s Advocacy for Josephine County and during his career he has acted as the department liaison with FBI, ATF, District Attorney’s Office, local law enforcement agencies, Women’s Crisis Support Team, Crime Stoppers, Children’s Advocacy and Treatment Center, and the Josephine County Courts. In his current position as the Operations Lieutenant he supervises the patrol division, the school resource officer and the crime prevention officer.
